I had a great experience working with Jeff. We started with the issues I identified as priorities, and made good progress on those through regular discussion, gentle challenging, and insightful “homework” assignments. I had more than one significant shift in perspective, which have absolutely helped me to be a more effective leader in my job.
Perhaps even more valuable was when we used our time to work through specific issues that arose at work, which may or may not have been directly related to the primary goal we were pursuing at the time. For example, there was one reaction I often noticed I had in response to a frequent scenario at work, but despite years of self-reflection, I had never been able to identify what was triggering the response. I had been unable to develop any strategies to help me respond effectively in the moment, rather than reacting emotionally.
During one of those situations, I reached out to Jeff for some spot coaching and we were able to talk the next day. He helped me uncover the specific issue that was the trigger, to see how that pattern had played out over and over in my life, to reality check the assumptions and fears that were behind my response, and to develop a new, healthier narrative. This was an issue that I had been working with for most of my professional life, and, thanks to my work with Jeff, I can now see the pattern when it’s happening, I have tools to respond with self-compassion, and I am able to remain in the driver’s seat rather than unconsciously making a choice simply to calm that fear. It’s amazing to finally be able to see that issue with clarity! I’m certain I would still be tripping over it but for Jeff’s willingness to come into that difficult place with me as I was going through it, and to apply love and compassion to help me figure out what was happening.
In our society today, it doesn’t always feel socially acceptable to think about personal, emotional issues as business issues. But make no mistake, they drive business decisions, because business decisions are made by people. We’ve all seen situations where a colleague is clearly making a decision based on their emotional response in the moment, rather than thinking through the problem with calm logic. I believe the primary antidote is self-awareness. Jeff’s coaching helped me increase my self-awareness and to grow my toolbox of strategies that help me make the best decisions possible for my company.
