Maslow said that we have a hierarchy of needs. That hierarchy, as he saw it, evolved over his life and writings. According to Scott Barry Kaufman, this was the hierarchy as of his death—
Safety
Connection
Self-Esteem
Exploration
Love
Purpose
My experience is that once our safety needs are fulfilled, we can leapfrog the other needs if we have a true sense of our purpose. When we find our purpose, everything else seems to fall into place. Synchronicities happen with ease. The people and resources (and yes, lessons) we need appear, seemingly out of nowhere.
Our purpose, though, isn’t about making a living or getting a title. It’s something deeper. Some reason that we are here, some way that each of us can use our unique talents to make the world better.
Sound like something that’s needed right now?
Of course this leads to the question, “How do I discover my purpose?”
I know of at least three ways. And I will post one each day for the next three days, and how each has helped me find my purpose.
Stay tuned…
